I have been a member for a couple of months but have never asked for advise before. this is a great web sight. I really appreciate what you are doing. A friend of mine was given a 21 year old gelding. He seems very healthy except for some areas on the front of his back legs. They look like very dry ,warty patches anywhere from the size of a nickel to the size of a silver dollar. they are irregular in shape though somewhat round. Some one told him it was rain rot and to use a solution of 1 part bleach to 4 parts water. that did nothing. someone else told him to use blue lotion on them. That only turned his legs blue. The more I searched on your web sight the more I feel they are occult sarcoids. Is that a possibility? if so is there something topical he can try? They don't seem to bother the horse at all. I have noticed they are spreading slightly. any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike Cedar

I would scrub those areas (and let it soak in for a few minutes) with a betadine scrub before rinsing thoroughly, as often as possible until they disappear. Sounds like a fungal thing to me and I have frequently seen such a problem in this location. The other places this occurs is on the opposite side on the back of the legs, and also on the back side higher up above the joint.

Hello Mike, Sarcoids are certainly a common skin disease of horses. Occult sarcoids are just that: hairless with no signs of tumors. The warty appearance you describe might be what is called a "verrucose sarcoid". For more on this see Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Sarcoid. DrO
