Dr. O., my gelding was nerved in both front feet June of 2003. He has remained pain free and sound with this procedure. Recently he had been stomping his front feet after being ridden. He is still sound. I inquired about this to my vet and he took a pen to the back of his heels and he had total sensation to this. He said that he felt the nerves have regrown and are tingling while doing so and have not yet regrown to the navicular region and at this point he is only feeling skin sensation. Is this usually how the regrowth is? He has been barefoot for the past 6 months and his feet have spread and grown like crazy, trimming every 4-5 weeks. Thanks in advance. Cathy

It is usually not a single nerve involved with a neurectomy and so the nerve to the skin could have regrown while that to the heel is still "nerved". Also it is possible these areas were never deinnervated as the branch to the back of the pastern can be higher than the usual neurectomy site. DrO

Thanks so much for the quick response. I was surprised that he had any sensation in his whole foot for the amount of nerve they took out was about four inches with lots of branches. Hopefully the heel will stay nerved or if they are regrowing, whatever the problem was has corrected itself (not with my or his luck, however!!)
