Dear Dr. O., My mare was vaccinated for EHV1+EHV4 two days ago. Last year she suffered from a local reaction and shew depression and low appetite for 3/4 days, with mild fever. This time she did not show any local reaction, normal appetite but temperature raised to 39.8 °C (sorry but I do not know how many °F it corresponds, normally is between 37 and 38 °C). I gave her something for the fever the vet advised me to give and this morning the temperature was normal (37.8°). The problem is that I want to breed her next month and my vet is not very happy about the reaction she is having to this vaccine. So we are considering not to vaccine her during pregnancy. What do you think about it? Is there a way to control her reaction to the vaccine? Could her reaction to the vaccine worsen vaccination by vaccination? Thank you very much in advance for your advise. Best regards Isabella from Italy

Unfortunately not having seen the reaction and being unfamiliar with the incidence of EHV in your area this is a decision that should be made by you and your vet. There is a way to control local reactions in horses and we outline the procedure at Care for Horses » Vaccines & Coggin's Test » Vaccines and Adverse Reactions. Yes the reaction could worsen with continued exposure. DrO
