Dear DrO, One of our mares, a 4yo that just started canter work, presents minor swelling on both her hind fetlocks, extending 2-3 inches above the sesamoids and some days involving the pastern. It feels to palpation that the sheath of the SF tendon has collected fluid or that the tendon is swollen inside the sheath, but this horse is of a lot heavier construction than the TBs I'm used to, so I don't have a reliable feel for it. She has no fever, and the swelling is not hot, painful or resulting in any kind of discomfort or lameness. It is more evident in the morning, and it goes completely away with exercise. I initially suspected someone overloading her with grain (she's an easy keeper and everybody loves her), but this is not the case. This has been going on for three weeks now, and I'm worried for fibrosis or other deposits. Unfortunately there's no access to ultrasounds, radiographs or bloodwork around here. Except bandaging, is there anything else we can do for her? Are there holdbacks in keeping her hinds bandaged every night, may be for ever?

With it being both sides it sounds like typical stocking up Christos for which night bandages are the best treatment. If this is a recent change you might check the skin for irritation for more on this and other rule outs and treatment suggestions see Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses. Thank you, Doctor, I hadn't seen the article. She's better now, actually there was no swelling this morning though she was unbandaged overnight. She had four days of rest and no grain at all, and it seems to have helped a lot, so we'll work from there. I found out today that for a couple of weeks she had been put in the stall without cooling off or hosing her legs after work...
