This is my first post. My 22 year old mare was 4 wks out from foaling. When I arrived home, she was down and thrashing around. The placenta was presented (red bag) I immediately called my vet. His dz was the foal was dead. He said he maybe able to save my mare, but by this time she was in pain and out of her head, thrashing around, rolling, falling down, unable to stand on her own. Was I wrong to ask him to put her out of her misery?

Dear Shirley: You were right to put her down. It is better to relieve her suffering. I know that it is hard to accept when this sort of thing happens but you were right to have done what you did with her. I thought that this past weekend I was going to have to put my elderly pony down, and I cried my eyes out, but fortunately he rallied round. But I know that when the time comes, when he can't get up, or he is in pain from colic, or something like that, that I will have to make the same decision that you made. Hang in there. Shirley, You acted to the best of your knowledge, cooperating with a professional to your loyal friend's best interest, with love and compassion. I see nothing wrong with it. Christos

Shirley: Never second guess yourself. It's useless. Trying to save your mare could have easily put her through additional unimagineable pain....with no guarantee of improvement. You made a courageous decision.
