I have a 11 year old Appaloosa mare that has RU and has had it for several years. Her left eye has shrunk in size and she is blind in that eye. She had problems with the right eye but with very aggessive treatment it has not had a flare up in almost 2 years although there is some scarring and I believe her vision is impaired in that eye. She still seems to get around very well. She is pastured with 2 other horse and a donkey in approximately 25 acres of free roaming hilly pasture.

I would like to have her bred so I can have a foal from her as she is a beautiful grey snowflake with great confirmation, other than this eye problem. But if it is hereditery, I do not want to pass the gene on. I was thinking of breeding her to a donkey to get a mule. Would this lessen the chance of passing it on? Has anyone bred mares with RU and if so what was the out come with the off spring?

Any help would be much appreciated. If the risk is minimal I am planning of breeding her sometime in May.

Thanks in advance.

Currently Cheryl, we do not believe this is a genetic problem.

Thanks DR.O, I was hoping it was not genetic. My vets had two different opinions. One said OK to breed her and the other said if it was his horse he woouldn't. I just needed another opinion.

Once again thanks.

Perhaps the one with the negative opinion was concerned about the problems one might encounter with a potentially blind pregnant/lactating mare and not the genetic problems?
