Hi, I have a 2 year old gelding who I just found out was anemic. He also has low white blood cell count and has had a swelling under his throatlatch since Janurary. He has been on turpcin twice since January and also was started on Acetazolamide in January. On the pamplet for the acetazolamide under warnings says aplastic anemia and other blood dyscrasias. So could the pills be causimg the anemia in my gelding? The vet said to give him red cell so I started it last Thursday and the swelling under his throatlatch has gone down. He doesn't have any hypp symptons for over a year but when he got sick in January the vet said it could have been associated with hypp so she suggested he go back on them. If the acetazolamide is causing the anemia I want to take him off and if it isn't I don't know what to do? Does anyone know about it? Thanks Lori

Hello Lori, What were the lab values (with units) concerning the blood cells. DrO

The vet did not tell me any of the lab values just that he was anemic and his white blood cells were low. Lori

Hi, My horse never got better and I was finally able to get my vet to agree the pills were causing the anemia. She wanted me to keep him on the pills and red cell. I did for awhile and then took him off the Acetazolamide but still have him on red cell. The swelling went down in his face, jaws and throatlatch and he has had no problems with any hypp symptoms even though I have stated giving him a few pounds of hay which is higher in potassium than before. I give him 4 pounds of his other hay and 3 pounds of the new hay. I am doi this so I don't run out of my lower potassium hay and so he gets used to it a little at a time. He does lick his salt block a ot and urinates a lot but that way he is getting rid of the excess potassuim. Thanks Lori
