Is it safe to breed an EU mare? Can Lepto be transmitted to the stallion and foal? I understand the logistical obsticles involved in having a partially blind broodmare as well as risk of flare up.

Currently we have no indication this is a congenital problem Lisa or that one horse is contagious for the condition to another horse. DrO

Dr. O, are you referring to Leptosporosis? We have a mare who had bloodwork done when our friend's dogs were diagnosed with it. Her bloodwork showed she was exposed to Leptosorosis, so were other horses on her place. This mare had been on her place twice to be bred. She had two foals, no problem. She is due any day now, normal pregnancy. She has been with the rest of our herd. She will not transmit it to her foals or to other stallions? We want to breed her to our stallion when she foals. Should a person put her through a course of antibiotics, would that do anything for her or just leave things be? EO

Thank you Dr. O. I will advise when her titers come back From what I have read, the research agrees with you... it is not contageous after the initial infection. I am still worried about my stallion as he is 22 *sigh* I guess we can AI!

LKR, All horses are exposed to leptospirosis intermittently. Without signs of disease and only a titer I would not recommend a specfic therapy. For more on this see, Equine Diseases » Reproductive Diseases » Problems Keeping Mares Pregnant » Leptospirosis & Abortion. DrO
