I am looking at purchasing a 16yo grey quarterhorse cross. The horse has some melanoms around the throat latch area and above right eye, they are firm covered with skin/hair. Owner says her vet told her they are nothing to worry about. We want him for pleasure riding no major showing etc. Would this be a wise purchase in light of these? Can these be nothing other than a looks problem for many years ? I know they are common, but do they commonly end up causing other major problems? He reportedly has none, under tail, or in sheath area. Thank you

Are you sure they're melanomas and not sarcoids?

How would you know the difference ? Are they too common in greys ?

No from what I have read they are not sarcoids. They are the size of marbles and under the skin. He does have one under tail dock as well as throat latch area

Hello Chandra,
Whether or not this is a wise purchase depends on many variables we do not have access to chief of which is your risk aversion and the value this horse represents. The article associated with this forum explains the clinical course of melanomas which is variable and can change over time.

Yes this can be just a asethetic problem but yes they can also end up being a major problem.

Thank you. The seller was negotiable on price and the horse's disposition was excellent, so we went ahead with the purchase! We will watch them, cross our fingers (pray) and take it from there.
