Dr O , I just read an ad for a product that claims to prevent EPM and will actually pay for treatment if you treat your horse for 90 days and subsequently get EPM. Any comments on this? See website https://www.paranex-p.com/

Hello Shelly, I see nothing in the ad nor any indication what-so-ever that this product has any remote chance of working short of providing an income stream for the manufacturer. Until they tell us what is in the product and give some reason why this might work this is should be considered a scam, and a clever one at that: Let's purpose this product has no effect which is highly likely. Say they have 10,000 customers buying this for their horses on it and the infection rate of a high risk area: 14 cases per 10,000 per year (taken from their site). I am roughly guessing looking at the dosage rate, the size of the bottle, and the price when bought in bulk to about a dollar a day. During the year they will take in 3,650,000 and have to pay out 12,000 dollars. And that is only if your horse has already been on it for 90 days and then, if I read this right, you go through the expense and time of having the Western Blot blood test followed by the WB CSF test. Yeah, I guess I knew this but was really hoping that someone had discovered some way of reducing the risk. Nothing like pure number crunching to show me the folly of my ways! Ah well.... yet again my subscription to this forum saves me money!
