Posted on Monday, May 3, 2004 - 9:18 am: Hello I have a 28 yr 1/4 mare, She has already popped 1 abcess in her heel bulb, about 3 weeks ago. Vet was out to confirm. Now she has popped another one in the cornary band and continues to limp how many abcess's can she have in there? The Vet has been out weekly checking on her. and the Farrier has been out with hoof testers trimmed her feet. but she is still limping on her right hind leg. Is there anything else I can do to help her? She gets her foot soaked with Warm water and epsom salts with betadine addedd. 2x a day, Then I spray the opening with betadine and put Ichtamol? (Spelling) and wrap it back up. But this has been going on for sometime now we have not ridden or worked her at all in a month. because she continues to limp on that back leg. |

Are you giving him any medicine for the infection? My vet had me give 2 scoops of tucuprin powder 1x a day for a week. I dissolved in water and syringed it in his mouth. My horse was not limping after the first week but he was tender because of the abscess cut out in his sole plus the one in the heel bulb which burst 4 days later. I continued to soak, treat and wrap for several weeks to keep it clean. It has been a month and I am riding him again. His heel bulb still has a horizontal split but it does not seem to hurt him. I think this confirms that sometimes it does take a month or so when abscesses exit at different places. I hope your mare will be 100% soon. - Ann |

For the past week she has been in the paddock by herself. because her playmate likes to Bossy and pushy soemtimes toward her. I figure less stress on her will help her out. There have been days where she is not limping and I think "Great she's getting better" then she starts gimping again. I just feel really bad for her and want to do everything I can to make her comfortable. I will read the article on Gravels to. My Vet and I were trying to advoid it popping out of the coronet band but no such luck. Thank you for the information. I will let you know how she does. |
