Hi Dr. O-- Our 24-year-old retired eventer has just been diagnosed with high ringbone. He is out to pasture on a friend's farm, several hundred miles away, and the local vet has prescribed bute daily, Surpass daily for the next week or so, and IM glucosamine one a week for four weeks. He's also recommended aluminum bar shoes. I am going to confer with our regular vet here tomorrow, who was the horse's vet for years while he was in competition, and who is also a specialist in lameness. But I'd like your opinion on the recommended course of treatment. I tried to attach the radiographs taken earlier today, but the files were too big. I'll try resizing them and sending them on tomorrow. Thanks! Zoe

Dr. O, I am so sorry, I am an idiot about these things. The file size of the Xrays I have is 356 KB each, and the maximum I can upload here is 64KB. Fortunately, my daughter's boyfriend is photographer, and I can check with him this evening. Bear with me... Zoe

Okay, this should work. Thank God for the younger generation. Here is the shot from the side: And here is the frontal shot: Hope it works and I didn't cut anything crucial out. Zoe

Hello Zoe, Let's call it by the more descriptive degenerative joint disease (arthritis) of the pastern joint. Zoe the recommendations for treatment and prognosis in the article all apply to your case. Essentially the article refers you to the section on arthritis and the "Overview" for conservative therapy and consider "Arthrodesis" when that fails. DrO
