When I turned out my horses tonight I noticed some rubbing marks on the outside bottom of the left ear on one of my horses.
Upon further inspection the ear (visible part) is clean and injury free but as I slightly pulled the ear towards me so I could get a better look I heard a noise. I can hear that noise every time I pull the ear towards me and down. Needless to say my horse was not happy with me. I wiped it out with betadine solution/water on a rag and had pieces of skin come out but there is no way I can get down to the area where the noise is coming from.
I felt both ears at the same time and there is no heat or swelling.
The noise sounds like when massaging the base of a dogs ear. I don't know how else to describe it.

There are no ticks I can see (I hardly ever have tick problems). I just can't imagine what causes to make that sound besides some sort of fluid build-up?

Without hearing the noise it is hard to comment Moni but if the horse continues to rub the ear and you feel the sound abnormal, I would have it examined. The noise alone is not a clear indication for a special trip by the vet.
