I am going to look at a mare on Sat - the owner said she has a hay allergy but is just fine as long as she isn't stalled for more than 24 hours. She said there is never a problem if the horse is kept outdoors (even in winter). I will certainly obtain more information but do you think I should even consider this horse? I have read the articles but can't tell if this would be COPD. I plan to ask who her vet is and check out the mare's records. The mare is 6 years old and sounds like a wonderful horse but this scares me. I would appreciate opinions. Thanks.

Hi Ann does Hay allergy mean she can not eat hay? I know I would pass over a horse with any major problems, it can get time consuming and expensive.

If she can eat hay, but should be kept outdoors, that sounds more like copd. Good luck whatever your decision.

Ann, this does sound like COPD but needs to be confirmed with the veterinarian. For more on diagnosis and management study the article Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Heaves & Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. then you can decide if this is something you want to take on.

Diane, sorry I didn't make myself clear. The horse can eat hay but has to be outdoors at all times. My first thought was COPD but the owner was clearly downplaying the condition. I can certainly keep the horse outside but worry that a time would come when the horse needed to be indoors (hoof issue or sick), and it would be a huge problem. Thanks for your response, Dr. O. I will still follow up with the vet, but this is sounding like a deal breaker for me. My 3 geldings are so easy that I think I am spoiled. I am really reluctant to take on a horse with these issues. Your help is really appreciated.
