Posted on Monday, Aug 27, 2007 - 11:32 am: Dr. O.Below is a question that I found back in a section of the site in 1999. My gelding has just had the same thing happen out of the blue. It is a hard lump about as big around as a silver dollar. It is under the skin and I can grab it an move it around. I found it yesterday just above the hip bone and was able to grab it and move it down to behind the hip bone and then put it back. Today it has "fallen" down in front of the hip and is sitting there. It sounds exactly like the post below. You originally asked the poster below if her horse had the opportunity to bump it. My horse is in a run in during the day and he could have bumped it at any time. I called my vet and asked him about it and he had no idea. He had never heard of anything like it. I then got on here to check and found the posting below. I have been particularly concerned because this follows two smaller bumps that appeared below the same hip earlier this year. These are small and hard and do not move. My vet looked at them and had no idea what they were. He didn't recommend biopsy because they didn't seem to be bothering him. They look like the bumps shown in a picture so I have asked about those on a different post. I don't know if the smaller pumps are connected to this larger movable one or not. Have you had any experience with something like this since Nancy posted her question years ago? Thanks, EllaB Original Post - (Out of the blue, my 16 yr old Arabian gelding who is very fit, had a lump near his hip bone. No sign of injury but it is very large , hard, solid and moves around under the skin when manipulated..The biopsy showed perhaps a fat tumor. Does anyone have any info regarding these...can they be gotten rid of any way...injections, etc? Nancy ) |

It appeared two weeks ago and the vet looked at it and had never seen such a thing and said if it is not bothering her not to worry.Hope someone can offer some insight. |

It is odd how freely they move about and have wondered if they are not a response to trauma to the relatively exposed ilium (hip bone) but it is conjecture and not well supported by the biopsy report as I would have expected a fibrous (scar like) histology. I have given clients an option of removal but I don't remember any making that choice and the ones I have seen do not change over time. It should be noted that there may be different causes and the location and similar characteristics does not mean these are all the same thing.DrO |

He recommended it coming out but thought waiting until winter was a good option as it did not seem to be bothering him. We are in Maine and don't ride much in the winter. Also that will take away the concern of flies bothering the site. I will let you know when it comes out what the biopsy shows. Ella |
