Good afternoon, I just acquired a mare who has Thrush. I've never had to deal with it before. I bought "Thrush Buster" last night so I will start treatment. A couple of questions, is she in pain? She doesn't act like it. Can she still be ridden? I've just started giving her a refresher course.. My second is a friend of mine said to use bleach..I did see the recipe that you, Dr. O likes and will try that if this doesn't work. I looked and the place I was at didn't have Pine Tar..

Patricia, from what I understand thrush can be painful if it is bad enough. Sometimes the horse may flinch when you are cleaning out the frogs. If your horse is not hurting then there should be no reason not to ride her. Once my farrier told me to use a bleach/water mixture (50/50) on one of my geldings because he thought he saw evidence of a little thrush. I used it only 1 or 2 times a week for a few weeks and it never turned into anything. From reading on this site the Thrush Buster seems to be what everyone uses that really works. I am sure others here will have more advice. Good luck with your mare.

Hello Parricia, Look under the subtopic clinical signs for an explanation of thrush as a possible cause of lameness (pain). DrO
