Hi, A horse at my barn has a cm wide and at least 1-2cm deep punture wound betwwen his cheek and mouth. It was very swollen. She is a young girl who cant really afford the vet unless necessary. I flushed it with the hose and told her to flush it twice a day as she cant bandage it to keep it clean put antibacterial cream on and put him on antibiotics. It gets very pussy but after hosing swelling goes down and it looks ok. Is this enough? I told her to at least call her vet. Dr O any other recomendations. I worry about head wounds and infection.
Thanks Katrina

If it is becoming swollen and pussy between treatments, at the very least it needs more frequent treatment Katrina. As to whether this is enough is impossible for me to tell, is there a chance it has penetrated into the oral cavity or that there still is a foreign body buried in the wound?

Thanks Dr O,
Thats what I thought.
I also am worried about a foreign body in the wound. I examined him and dont think that there is, however I am not a vet and I am not 100% sure. I will check his mouth. I did look in his mouth breifly but will look more closly.Unfortunaly the barn I am at just wanted to leave it and put swat on it. They told the pore girl it will heal on its own. I have been treating it for her as she the owner gets gets queezy and the barn owner is of no help. I will keep recomending her to call the vet however, and I will just keep it flushed and clean in the meantime. If it has penetrated the oral cavity I should insist she gets a vet out. Right? I know I would for my horse. Thanks for your thoughts DR O. very much appreciated.
