Dr O, I have just found this site and I appreciate the opportunity to present our current situtation; 12y/o mustang mare,14h,school horse for dozens of young girls for many years. The last couple of years when the weather starts warming the horse has exibited mild unilateral UPF. This year it has progressed to moderate/severe bilateral fixation, to the distress of many young equestrians. The mare tries it's hardest to overcome it's new found disability. Having readup on this insatiably I have yet to find a similiar presentation. Do you have any thoughts on seasonal affectation before we decide on the next step, are there any case studies that you know of utilizing shock wave therapy with UPF? Thank You JoeLally

Your presentation is a little odd and if I had to look for a reason I would look at cyclical changes in weight or condition as a likely cause. However this does not change the treatment recommendations. I have not seen any clinical reports for shockwave treatment of UFoP and until there is some research to support this use I would worry about this sort of tissue disruptive therapy close to a joint like the stifle, it may induce arthritis.
