Dear Doctor O, Simon continues to have hives this morning. My trainer informed me that they changed hay two days ago. The hay is dryer and dustier than the last batch. Meanwhile Simon have more hives this morning. I don't know what to do. I can't ask the barn to change his hay, can I? They have hundreds of bales stored for the next month or so. Will his body adjust to the hay allergy, if in fact that is the problem? Is there a danger to having him exposed to the hay over a long period of time? Should I prevent him from eating it? When do I call the vet? My trainer thinks it's no big deal and that I should forget about the hives, saying they will go away in a few days. My concern, of course, also involves the skin irritation he's been having for months now under his arms at the girth. I doubt the medication I have been using for months now could be causing the hives, right? Point me in the right direction. Please...........Robin

Hello Robin, Sorry for the late response, I have not had internet access for the last week. Hives are very common in horses and often it is very hard to determine the cause but in general your trainer is right they are self limiting and usually go away in a few days. If they persist, continue to worsen or cause the horse irritation you should call the vet. The article associated with this forum explains about hives, causes and treatment. DrO

Thank you Doc for your response. I just read it. I have been very sick for the last two weeks with Erlichiosis. My horse's hives have disappeared. He was on azium for about 4 days and they finally went away. Thanks again for all your help. Robin
