I have a 10 year old QH gelding. He has not urinated in the last 18 hours. Normally he has his 'pee spot' in his stall. Today, the 'pee spot' is not there, or anywhere. He has no fever, temp is 99.2. His gut sounds are normal. His gums have a good reaction time. I turned off his automatic waterer, and put buckets in his stall to better monitor his water intake. I will check his stats again tonight. If he hasn't urinated by tomorrow, I will call the vet. Any ideas what this could be?

Is he confined to the stall or is there a possibility that he is trying out a new spot outside? Has he had any upsets in his life? New horse, loss of horse, any major change? You might also try turing him out in a big area to stretch his legs, just keep an eye on him and if he DrOps get ready with a clean cup to catch a sample. I would also check his sheath, make sure that he has not drug a piece of shaveings or other irritant that would cause him pain if he extended his penis (my gelding once had a horse fly caught up there and neither of them were very happy). Beyond that, it could turn ugly quckly so keep that watchfull eye tuned in... good catch, many owners would miss that (of course none here on HA).

In general Ramona if there are no signs of straining or any other symptoms, you probably are unneccesarily worried and he is playing "hide the pee spot". Though lack of urination is a symptom of many serious diseases, it is almost never the primary clinical sign in these cases. DrO

He is confined to his stall, except when I turn him out. Because we've had such a bad rain/wind storm, I was turning him out for a 1 to 2 hour romp in the covered arena. I think I figured out the problem. I tasted his water from his waterer. Yuck! I clean his automatic waterer every three days, scrubing it. It had the taste of rust. I realized that regardless of how much I clean his waterer, it still had a rusty taste to it. Because I don't own the barn, I hung two 10 quart buckets up for him. The water straight from the tap, tastes fine. I have no problem coming twice a day and refilling buckets, easy preventative measure. Thanks for the advice. He was peeing the next day with the added water buckets. He hasn't touched him automatic waterer since.
