DrO,

We just bought a yearling pony around a month ago. She passed her prepurchase evaluation fine. We did not do any radiographs on her thinking that if she appeared sound, why bother at her age. Our blacksmith just came out to do her feet for the first time and stated that she has foundered before because of all the rings around all her feet. This filly, who is 15 months old, has lived outside her entire life. She has always been barefooted. She has been through 2 northwestern Virginia winters. Could the changes in temperature, weaning, growing, being innoculated, etc. cause so many rings to appear on her feet. Her soles are not DrOpped, she does not appear to have any hoof wall seperation, and she is not lame. My local vet is out of town this weekend so I can't ask him about it until he returns. What do you think?

Debbie- Our yearling mini has rings also- if you mean like uneven growth rings, or ridges, on the hooves. I just figured it was due to the shipping pneumonia he had as an 8 month old, and not due to founder. No way did this little horse founder, I can't imagine. I always thought that sickness or poor nutrition can make those "rings" and that they will eventually grow out (they appear to be doing so) but will be interested to hear the doctor's opinion. -Beth Gordon

Hi Beth,

Thanks for the comment. Yes I mean uneven growth rings, or very slight ridges. She doesn't have just one ring that goes all the way around...she has several...one around 1/2 inch down from the corenet, then another a little farther down...and so on...every little bit until you reach ground. As far as I know this filly has never been sick...and I do know the breeder pretty well...plus the vet that did the pre-purchase never mentioned anything about the rings and said her feet looked good...so I don't know...except I have a tendancy to worry a lot...and when my farrier said she had foundered I got all worried. Wouldn't it be very unusual for a yearling to have foundered anyway...one that has always been turned out and on grass only?

Hello Danny,
Rings have many causes many not associated with founder, see the article that is associated with this forum for a list of possibilities.
