Hi, Dr. O. My mare had an abscess burst at the coronary band that left about a 1 1/2 in. slit had vet out and he opened it up from the bottom. She had immediate relief. This was about 2 and a half weeks ago. I followed the abscess protocol and she is fine at the walk and seems fine at the canter, but head bobs when she trots. This is from observing her in pasture. How long does it normally take for the lameness to disappear? I,m in no big hurry to ride her, but was wondering if this head bob at trot is normal at this stage? It doesn't seem to be getting worse and maybe a little better but not much, if she was re-abscessing would she be getting worse or is this normal for a nasty abscess? Thanks much

Some severe abscesses might take this long to heal but I cannot judge if this is OK for your horse Diane. As long as it continues to improve I would not be too worried but if it gets to where things are not getting noticably better every couple of days I would have the foot reexamined. DrO

Our quarter horse had a similar abcess which opened up at the coronary band by itself. We treated it and put a boot on it for a couple of days. After two weeks when she wasn't favoring it anymore we had the ferrier put back shoes on. She was still tender when he put the nails in so we should have left it for another week. However she was fine once she was shoed and probably should have been shoed long before and then this would have never happened. She never did any head bobbing. She is very much happier now!
