I have a 17 Hand Leopard App that needless to say with me being 5'2" I don't see the top of his butt very often. But since I have owned him (3 Years Now) he has had a half dollar size completely bald spot about 2" from his spine in the very top of his butt - about 1 foot back from top of his tail. Every once in awhile it gets irritated and gets a little scabby, but yesterday I touched it and it obviously hurt some because he pulled his butt under him when I touched it. Not bad, just enough for him to tell me it ouched. I got a step stool so I could have a look at it good. It had a few little bloody spots on it, nothing terrible, but there was a little blood. I try to put sun tan lotion on pretty often, but sometimes just forget since it is so high and I don't see it when I work with him. I put a little Furizone on it yesterday, but what would you think this could be. Can it be skin cancer of some type, should I have it checked out by the Vet? Just want to ensure that this big guy is not in trouble here with another possible problem. He has been through tough times this year already with his golf size tumor that was benign that grew on the botton of his foot at his frog and sole this year, that has finally been healed that I would hate for him to have another problem. He is so gentle for his size and so personable that it hurts me to see him hurt with him being so sweet. Any words of advise ?

Has the vet seen this spot yet? With his history I think he should.

A light Pinkish almost white, I have not called the Vet out yet because I am not at home for the next week. My Father In Law is taking care of the horses. I did look at prior to leaving yesterday and still scabby, so I put more Furizone on it. I was told to use the Furall spray to try and dry the area so the scabs will fall off. Should I ask my Father In Law to do that?? I would think I would need to keep it moist.... Not sure what to do... Any advise?? I will also take a picture of it when I return so there will be a visual of it for you to look at...

Stacie, a wound on the back will collect dirt, so something "sticky" is not the best thing to use. I don't know what vets say about "BluKote," but I have had good luck with it on body wounds, especially on the back and rump. Furall Spray is also an antiseptic that dries, so I think it would be a good thing to try. Either medication may also protect the light spot from becoming sunburned.

It is possible that this spot has become cancerous (squamous cell carcinoma) Stacie, I can't judge from here. Even looking may leave some doubt requiring a biopsy. If you wanted to keep the horse out of the sun for a week or two to see if it started healing that probably would not be a big risk that things would worsen substantially but I cannot be sure of that.
