I don't know if any of you have a problem with this in your horses, but in the July 2004 issue of "Horse Journal", they gave the following recipe for "Sweet Itch Potion": 1/4 tsp Campho-Phenique (human product available in drug stores) 1/4 tsp of Calm Coat (www.calmcoat.com, or call 888-396-004) Mix these two products into a 13 oz jar of petroleum jelly (Vaseline or a generic) To aid the mixing process, you can carefully heat up the petroleum jelly in the microwave until it softens, then add the two products and mix well. Apply after it has cooled down and solidified. The petroleum jelly provides a barrier, while the Campho-Phenique is a barrier, repellent, anesthetic/disinfectant. Calm coat is thick, providing a barrier, soothing essential oils and a repellent action. The result is a thick mixture that holds against the skin. With a small spatula, scoop the mixture out and apply it in a thick layer two to three times a day or anytime the horse seems itchy. The itch relief should be immediate (the Campho-Phenique is also an anesthetic). I know that this can be a terrible problem with some horses. The Horse Journal accepts no $$$ for advertising and has seemed to be strictly unbiased in their decision making process as they try out all the products first for themselves and then make their recommendations. I hope this might help someone and their horse! Sincerely, Sherry

Oooo, I have a new patient in the practice who looks like a classic sweet itch case of several years duration . We are in adjusting the management phase right now, if that fails I will give this a try. DrO
