I have a belgian mare who over the last few months (since her booster vaccs) has had mildly swollen glands, heavy breathing and nasal discharge. Originally I was thinking spring allergies, but symptoms are getting worse lately.

The once runny clear-clear yellow discharge changes intermittently to cloudy yello/white. She is eating fine, normal temperature. Her nose/sinuses have now swollen. She snorts to release the discharge and breathe more easily. She has no cough.

She's on 24 hour turnout (was stalled 12 hours a night on straw over winter with no problems) but has free access to the barn. Her exercise is 2-3 times per wk light riding.

My vet says allergies - don't worry. She's had antihistamine/pencillin/steroid shots and TMP/S for 10 days but with no effect.

I don't want her to develop COPD or worse by missing something simple. Any suggestions for controlling these symptoms?

Upper respiratory symptoms (snotty nose, swelling of the nasal passages) are not indicitive of COPD. If this has been going of for several months I think treatment should be based on the results of further diagnostics which would include a complete physical, blood work up, endoscopic exam of the URT, and head radiographs.
