Here we go again..I have a older horse 17. Sunday noticed that he was slightly lame. Not terrible at all, but noticed that while eating, he was kicking out his from right leg to eat, which is my sign that it hurts as we have had so many issues with his foot this year. I thought that everything was back to normal, last shoeing he needed no hospital plate, no special pads to protect his frog and sole that has grown back from this weird tumor that he had...Finally, since late January, this poor horse has had to withstand my husband and I changing bandages for months. Anyways - I felt i needed to give a little history...

His pastern is swollen, noticably now and is not warm to the touch, but is hard, not a soft swollen type, but it is definitely swollen, not sure what to do. Hate to call the vet out again to check him out, hoping I can take care of this without involving him, but if need be, I will have him come out again. I think his truck can drive itself, as many times as he has had to take care of this old guy this year... Any thoughts on this problem??

If you are using the kicking out as the only sign of lameness you should know that some horses do this while eating normally and is not a typical sign of leg or foot pain unless the pain is stinging or sharp.

If the horse is lame and the fetlock swollen it should be evaluated by the vet. Probably not an emergency if the symptoms are mild but you should call your vet and check in with him anyway in case there are any details we missed here.
