6 months ago I adopted a 4 year old STB gelding. He trained but never raced since his is a roarer. The roaring isn't a problem since I don't ride that hard, and the horse appeared OK otherwise. As I began training him and riding him for 30 minutes or more he started trying to urinate frequently. No problems were found by a vet exam and ultrasound however a few weeks later he became lame on the right hind. He had always moved this leg very slightly out before he put it down and he was only lame for a day. Anyway, this time the vet did a lameness exam and it turns out his back was sore. His saddle has always fit him well and been checked out by my instructor and the vet doesn't think this is the problem. He had bute, then muscle relaxers and was turned out for 6 weeks. He has not been ridden but is still muscle sore in his back and does not DrOp fully to urinate. The vet thinks it is kissing spines but can't tell without an x ray. Here's my question:

I 'm concerned that I will put a lot of money into this horse and never find a clear diagnosis or find one that nothing can be done about.
1. If it is kissing spines, is the only treatment injections? (I've never had any luck with accupuncture and we are already doing stretching exercises. )
2. Do kissing spines ever fuse and stop causing pain?
3. The horse is not on stall rest but is turned on on pasture. I hate to confine him but is there any chance that this would help? Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Maureen
