About a week ago, my 9 month old colt had a big swelling on his jaw at a.m. feeding. I didn't think much about it as he spends evenings with a mini-stud, and they box a lot. Assumed me had banged his jaw on the mini or on a post. I gave him some bute, and just kept an eye on him.

The swelling has gradually decreased but last night I noticed that the wound now looked like a burn and also had a bad smell. I could see a little pus oozing from what just looked like the reddened skin. I started him on Tucoprim as that is what I had on hand.

Today the swelling is down even more, the smell has greatly diminished, but now I can see two punctures with a little pus oozing. So am assuming snake bite was the original cause of the swelling.

He acted a little ill a couple of days after I discovered the swelling, but since then, he has been pretty much normal.

Dr O, I read your article on snake bite first aid--you mention TMZ/SMZ but not tucoprim. Since he seems to be responding to the tucoprim, do you suggest I continue it or switch to another antibiotic (I have some TMZ/SMZ on hand)?

I thought I would watch him closely for another day or two, and if he takes a turn for the worse or stops improving, I'll have a vet take a look at him.

Which colt, Cynthia? Snakes are scarey!!!! Poor baby probably put his little nose down for a closer look at the strange, wriggling creature!

We will keep him in our prayers!

Tucoprim is just the brand name of a potentiated sulfa so could be used.

Thanks Dr O...I should have looked on the label. The colt is much improved today...the wound looks better but he has swelling in the throat area, so i'm keeping close tabs on him.
