Hi Dr. O
I have a 16yo dutch warmblood. I've had him about a year. He is greying around the throat latch. He came to me that way. He also had a spring/summer mild heaves that is being treated effectively with Ventipulmin.. he is due to come off that by mid Oct (we are in NJ). He has a slightly fuller coat in the summer than some of the other horses in our barn, but barely so as i did'nt at first even think it was thicker than normal. I've had one person (An equine Chiropracter) tell me to check him for cushing and another (Equine Massage person
) tell me that because of the grey around his throatlatch and the cough that this could be thyroid. I have never heard of thyroid causing grey around the throatlatch before (I figured being almost 17 causes grey around the throatlatch) and certainly never heard of coughing connected to thyroid. I'd like to know if these symptoms are indeed endocrine related or is this just horse fooey..

Thx
Lori

Hello Lori,
you will find the clinical signs for both of these disorders in the articles on these diseases in this section. By reading them carefully I think you will be able to make this judgement and better understand these problems than if I just give you a simple yes or no. If anything in the articles in confusing I will be glad to clarify.
