Posted on Friday, Jul 23, 2004 - 9:07 am: I need some advise, It has been one month since my horse Cocoa hurt his hind leg. He kicked the horse trailer and cut the side above the hoof. I had the vet out the same night, she flushed the leg, placed nerve blocks and gave him antibiotics into the foot. The next day the treatment was the same at the vets office. I was told to keep it wrapped only changing the bandage every 5 to 7 days... (i changed it every 2 days ). By week 4 he was starting to hold up his leg and not using it to much. I called the vet back out , A new vet came this time and started him on Banamine , Baytril, Pain meds, Iv's after 4 days she said she didnt think she could do any more and I should put him down.. Well i had to have a second appinion so i called on another vet, he has me soaking the foot in epson salt , finished the antibiotics yesterday and now the the foot is oosing from the spot where the first vet was flushing the foot... yesterday i started putting itctammol cream on the small opening , it continues to drain , am I doing everything that can be done or is something being overlooked ? Please Help |

The vets need to formulate a diagnosis and base reasonable treatment on that: why do they think this horse is becoming more painful. Has a radiograph been done to check for bone or joint infection? What about the flexor tendon sheath has it become infected? I do question a few of the current treatments 1) Is it wise to soak a open wound in water contaminated by the dirty hooves? 2) Is it wise to dress an open wound with something used to draw out abscesses? 3) If infection is the most likely cause for ongoing lameness should the horse be off antibiotics? We do have instructions on caring for wounds at Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Long Term Deep Wound Care. I would review these articles and working with your vet see how they might fit into what you are doing. DrO |

Posted on Sunday, Jul 25, 2004 - 8:33 pm: DrOThank you for your reply.I am following the treatment that my new vet has ordered. Let me clarify where I am putting this drawing cream, I am placing it at an area that was oosing where the last vet was flushing hsi joint. By putting this cream on there it has pulled lots of infection out... He is now putting all his weight on the foot and walking very good on it. I have seen so much progress in the last two days. The wound that was cut has healed very well . I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best. Thank you for your reply. |
