Posted on Sunday, Jul 25, 2004 - 1:17 pm: Hello,I have a 3 year old Percheron he is about 2000lbs and 18hands. He has had hock problems in the past because he had septic as a foal. Now he has UFP. My vet told me to do the same as your website exercise. I want to make sure he didn't injure his ligament. We had a back up session on the ground where I asked him to back up quickly and for more distance than usual and he had a real hard time doing this. I took it as a respect issue and now I think it might of been a medical issue. Right after that he came up with UFP just a few days after the back up session. I took him to my vet as soon as he started having these problems and that is when she told me to do the exercises. I was reading here and now I'm wondering if it is an injured ligament more than a lack of muscle or fat. If that is the case would rest be better than execise? About 2 month before the back up session he had a fever for 5 days at 105 maybe a virus and about 1 month after that I had to worm all of my horses with Panacur power Pak because they were looking slender the vet did blood work and recommended that. My vet told me he probably started having the UFP because he lose some muscle maybe from the stress of the virus and the worms and Panacure and that weaken the Quadricept muscle and now his patella is not getting pulled up where it should be. At a walk he will get slightly stuck (the ligamnent strung across the bone is what I got from your web site) and at a trot you can't see it at all. At a walk he will swing his leg out to the side to release it. Would this be a mild case? I did notice the other day we worked more than normal up hill and the next day at a trot he had a little bit of a head bob when I was riding. Should I be concerned about that or if he gets more sore from exercise would that tell me it is an injured ligament instead of lack of muscle? Thank you for every thing Donna |

A head bob suggest a fore limb lameness. You should discuss this possibility with your vet and if the limb that is getting stuck is also lame the lameness should be localized and then proper treatment could be instituted.
