Dear DrO,
I have a 10-year old Appendix gelding that has developed multiple hard nodules in his girth area as well as a few other places. I thought they were hives at first but they are too hard and he has had them for months. I live in Virginia and it has been buggy, extra humid, and very wet this year. I don't know how much they itch, but there is no missing hair from rubbing. I was told that they may be a type of filaria and that it would probably take months to eradicate. Can I use DMSO with a wormer to kill the parasite?? If so, how much of each, how often, how long, and how do I keep from burning his skin?? Thanks so much!!
P.S. I was using my leather girth but was advised to use my fuzzy girth instead...ok??

Lets see, the most common filariae would be onchocerciasis, see Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Onchocerciasis Dermatitis. For recommended treatments. But before you do you ought to read » Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors which is aimed at describing the common causes (more common than filaria anyway) so that you might take a good guess at it from history and appearance.

With the information I have, I don't have a preference for girth as long as it is clean and does not irritate the bumps.
