My mare has had a lump about an inch in diameter and 1/2 in. swelling for about six months on her front upper leg. I originally thought it was from a bug bite, but not sure. It didn't seem to bother her so I just left it alone. Recently someone suggested putting glycerin on it for 3 days, 3 day off, then 3 days back on. After 2 days the lump changed shape and starting coming to a head. There was some pus coming out, like a boil. So now I've started something and I'm not sure what to do next due to the open sore. I was given Antiphlogistine, a medicated poultice dressing, but I'm not sure about it. Any suggestions...Thanks

I would say there is a good chance that there is a foreign body in her leg causing the swelling and drainage. you might try drawing salve, ichthammol, or black drawing salve on it now, unless the poultice is also a drawing salve. She might even have a b-b or something in there. My reining trainer had a horse in training that kept getting a sore on its shoulder, it would heal, then break open, and repeat. They finally took him someplace that had a big enough xray machine to look into the shoulder, and there was a b-b in there from someone shooting him. Once it was removed he was fine and never had any more problems. My sister in law had a cat that kept doing the same thing with a sore on its leg, healing, then breaking over and draining, several times. I told her to look at the wound good and sure enough, there was thorn or large splinter in the wound. chris www.canyonrimranch.net
