Posted on Sunday, Aug 15, 2004 - 8:39 pm: My 4 1/2 yr old Welsh Cob/Thoroughbred gelding was diagnosed with ERU last year. He has had 6 episodes over the course of the year. Each episode has been treated with banamine (injection and/or paste immediately upon seeing signs of discomfort) and dexamethasone (pill form 2x/day for one week, 1x/day until episode ends). He is also on a daily dose (1gm) of bute. Each episode has lasted on average 3 weeks. The frequency of the episodes has ranged from 3 weeks to several months. To date, only the right eye is affected. I recently purchased a Guardian mask. Alistair (my gelding) is in an on/out turnout. I've had the mask on 24/7 during episodes. Prior to this I was using a Crusader mask, but worried that too much light was getting through to the eye. Should he wear the mask all the time?My biggest concern is that we are not treating the episodes aggressively enough. From what I understand, that seems to be the key to preventing blindness (??). I was also wondering about the frequency of Alistair's episodes. This number (6 /year) seems to be higher than average? Our vet was last out in May. He is an excellent vet, but not an opthamologist. He encouraged me to search out the avdice of others. But, as of May, Alistair's sight seemed intact. Although, I have noticed a blueish haze to the eye during episodes. However, his eye appears clear during quiescent periods. A few other questions...Is the Gaurdian mask the best to use? Should he be worked during episodes? Is there anything more I can do? My primary concern in Alistair's comfort. Thank you for your time. Any information is very much appreciated. Jane |

Start there and read carefully. The purpose for the mask is two fold: keep flies and sunlight out as best as possible. I am not familiar with these brands (perhaps some of our members will comment) but that is the basis for comparision. If the horse is fairly comfortable, I believe he can be used. DrO |
