I have a 5-month-old colt that was weaned about two weeks ago. He is stalled at night and turned out during the day. Five days ago I noticed that he had swelling in the ankle, fetlock and up the cannon bone on his right hind leg. The fetlock also looked swollen on the left hind leg. The vet said it looked like a mild bowed tendon. There is no heat and no noticable lameness. He was stalled for three days with no improvement and the left leg was swelling more. I turned him out the last two days thinking that maybe it was just stocking up. The swelling in the left leg has gone down but there appears to be no significant improvement in the right leg. I don't know whether to put him back in the stall or leave him out.

Scott, can you put a standing wrap on the colt while in the barn.? this might help in the swelling.. what i have done is cold hose the leg, smear icey hot all over then wrap it in plastic then the standing wrap over that.. DON'T do this unless the colt is in the stall.. Ann

Scott, if there was no lameness and the bilateral nature makes a bowed tendon unlikely but stocking up is not the only explanation see Equine Diseases » First Aid » Pressure Wraps, Poultices, Cold and Heat Therapy for Swelling in Horse Legs for ideas on swelling and Equine Diseases » First Aid » Pressure Wraps, Poultices, Cold and Heat Therapy for Swelling in Horse Legs for treatment ideas. The Icy Hot that Ann recommends should be used cautiously as it has a rubifacient in it that might be irritating to a foal's skin. Note that any change in treatment should be discussed with your veterinarian. DrO
