My 2 month old arab filly is at Tufts Lg Animal Hosp since I found her down having seizures last week. She's coming home tomorrow on Phenobarb. I've read the limited liturature available for this disorder and the vet at Tufts suggests never breeding this filly as Lavender Foal synDrOme may be related to this seizure synDrOme. She has no egyptian bloodlines. Is there any info available about a correlation between the 2 disorders? Obviously I would never breed on a lethal trait. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Vicki

Hello Vicki, I apologize for the slowness of this response, somehow this email worked its way to the bottom of the list. Unfortunately I cannot really answer your question. Yes lavender foal synDrOm of Arabs is associated with neurological problems including seizures but it is not clear from the literature that I have if seizures in otherwise normal Arab foals have a higher incidence of the recessive lavender foal gene. This strikes me as a question that should be answerable by careful history taking from foals effected with LFS but I cannot find anyone who has done this. I have not heard anyone express this concern before about Arab foals with seizure. I would ask the person at Tufts, do they have additional info and we would love to know what they say. DrO

Thanks for getting back to me. There seems to be very little info on seizure disorders in Arab foals. I'll just have to hope all goes well and she'll have a normal life.

Vicki, I'm so sorry to hear about your filly - I hope things have improved with her since this was first posted. The comment from Tufts re: a possible relationship between LFS and seizures really caught my eye. I would love to discuss the case of your filly further, whether it be here or in private (phanilah@aol.com). Beth
