Dr. O.

Since I last posted, Copper, to outward appearances is healing. Coming at a lope when called, trotting out at will, bidable. No limping or favoring. No anhedonia. HOWEVER, second opinion Vet (after taking his own x-rays) discovers definite sign of bone infecton and/or chipped bone. Recommends surgery (very costly) or euthenasia. Vet #1 x-rays shows nothing to be concerned about. DON'T want to address euthenasia. Plan on confronting Vet #1 with Vet #2 x-rays. Getting mixed messages. Vet #1 gave actual thumbs up last visit (while keeping his head down, no smile, yet states "no problem"). Vet #2 states horse needs major surgery (no prognosis guarenteed) and recommends "cut your losses". Keep in mind, this is a grade gelding that was acquired in a trade for hay for a minimal amount. Still, have become attached, want to do the right thing. Don't want to put this horse down yet don't want the horse to suffer. Where do I go from here. Vet #2 x-ray says there is a chip above fetlock(?) where, without major surgery this will not heal. Still no guarentee the horse will be sound. Having trouble separating emotion from logic. What do you suggest the humane thing is at this point?

Obviously I cannot pass judgement on the horse not being able to examine him. But you have one vet that is suggesting you euthanize a sound horse with a healing wound while the other says things look OK. Hmmmm.....
