Hello Dr. O and everybody, My mare is a bit nervous and tends to pull back while being tied normally I tie her up on a bailing twine so it breaks if she really pulls, while I was away she was tied on to a poll and fell on her hocks, she went very lame on the right hind and swelling appeared, she was injected with anti-swelling drugs and put to rest for a while. Although there was an improvement she has not come sound again and the swelling remains. As some of you will be aware vets are not an option here. However someone mentioned about a vet that deals with race horses on the border of Texas, a Mr. Esquivel and he said that the liquid has to be drained and then inject a solution of something that is used for asthma an respiratory problems and some anti-swelling solution which he claims forms a gel kind of stuff that clears the problem. It all sounds a bit medieval to me, and I wonder if it is common practice on race horses and if it is a permanent cure or it will just do for a while with worse side effects, my worry is if he drains the liquid of the joint. I am so confused, Any comments will be very much appreciated. Thanking you in advance for any help Liliana

Liliana, without knowing what is hurt it is impossible to know what would be good treatment and what the outcome would be. The asthma medication is almost certainly a steroid which is sensible in inflammation is involved but I do not know what the antiswelling solution that forms a gel could be. While at the vets I would recommend the horse get a good exam and if the diagnosis still uncertain have him do some radiographs. DrO
