Yesterday I had a 2-hour trail ride with my Fjord gelding who is healthy and slightly overweight. We did the same trail last weekend but it was not as hot as yesterday (94 degrees). After the ride he was mildly sweaty and acted normally, drinking water and eating grass hay while the humans ate lunch. I am concerned because, when I saw him uriate, the last squirt appeared to be bloody. Is it possible that this is a result of muscle tissue breaking down from overwork and being excreted?

Hey Redmare, DrO would probably know more about this, but I don't think it was "blood", I do think if your horse sweated alot, he just urinated out the concentrated minerals and stuff left over after sweating. I notice after long rides in hot weather my gelding's urine looks much darker than usual, once he's rehydrated his urine is back to a clear, light yellow/amber. Gave me a scare the first time I saw it come out so dark! I am interested to hear what DrO says regarding this, if I"m making sense or what. LOL!

Thanks Angela. I hope it's a normal occurrence and nothing to worry about. It's great to have a vet to answer these questions, thanks Dr O! My boy was fine today, happy and playful as always.

As Angel states it was unlikely to be blood. Horses do have many pigments in their urine that normally are diluted out but as the urine becomes concentrated can turn a dark cloudy yellow and even take on a reddish tinge. Some of the pigments are excreted as yellow but as the sunlight hits them turn distinctly red. If you run a search on blood and urine you will find other such discussions from previous posters. DrO
