My tw gelding's two back legs are swollen since this morning. They are not hot and went down somewhat after an hour of cold water therapy. He is in a stall with no access to poisonous plants. Any idea on what's going on?

Lots of ideas Tamra and they are presented in the article Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses. DrO

Thanks for responding... I checked out what you suggested but unfortunately did not see anything that helped...he is still at the "down somewhat" stage today so I gave him some banamine and hopefully that will help

None of the many conditions described in the article that cause stocking-up apply to your horse? By knowing a probable cause we can better suggest a treatment. DrO

it turned out to be the oat hay - i somehow got a batch of "grass hay" that had oats in it - his legs swell up each time i feed him the oat hay mix - despite the advice of others - they say he is not having a reaction to the oats but obviously he is - hope this info might help -

I too find the oat hay very unlikely, but perhaps it is contaminated with something: mycotoxins? DrO
