Dr. O, I have a 2 1/2 year old gelding that has grown way too fast. We have done corrective shoeing on him since he was a foal but the work was far from what was needed. With the help of a new farrier over the past 6 months he has really turned around and we thought was doing significatly better. He has NOT been lame but his fetlock has been out of line with fast growth being a definite problem. I had him x-rayed this week and his coffin bone has a bone spur on it. I was told that he would become very arthritic and need to be put down. We are not riding him as he is young and my veterinarians feeling is if we don't get a lot of exercised on him we should just put him down. Is there any way to take a bone spur off with surgery on the coffin bone? I am going to pick the x-ray up and get a second opinion. Any advice? Linda

I personally think the bone spur, without any current lameness, is of much less certain consequence but then again I have not seen the lesion. You have already started on my recommendation: get a second opinion from a experienced source however having the horses conformation also reevaluated in light of the radiographs will give you a more accurate assesment than looking at the radiograph alone. Also your expectations of work should be factored in. DrO
