Hi, Dr Osome! and anyone else!
1 week after being shod, Trooper (a horse I'm boarding for a friend) shows recurrent lameness only while riding. He starts out ok, but gradually gets worse until after about a half hour it is obvious he is trying not to put too much weight on his RH. Vet found no lameness. Two weeks later tried to ride and again same thing. His RH hoof is white and can see (past) bruising which looks like 3 horizontal streaks 2" to 3" long. Nails go through some of this bruising. Nails seem to be high, about 1.25" to 1.5" from bottom. I was wondering if it's possible for him to be sensitive to those high nails? Can that make a horse sensitive to ground pressure?
Thanks,
Jeans.

Hello jeans,
Though a close nail usually has a history of getting better as the hoof grows out or much worse if it becomes infected it is possible. But there are many possibilities for lameness that worsens with exercise and the nails can be that high without causing problems. The diagnosis of a hot nail is usually made by carefully tapping the nails with a hammer, see Diagnosis of Lameness for more on examination of a lame horse.

If the problem persists sounds like you may need to arrange a visit by the vet following a ride.
