Posted on Sunday, Oct 10, 2004 - 3:51 am: The farrier pulled a freshly shod foot after the horse became lame. He appled betadine to the site and instructed me to apply poultice for the next three days along with bute.I applied the poultice to the old nail holes and placed a huge amount to the base of the hoof. I placed a piece of paper as a cover then a piece of cardboard to the outline of the shoe. This was all secured with vet wrap. I knew not to leave any adhesive on the coronet. Should I be packing the site with cotton? Is there a better way to bandage the hoof? I did read the articles addressing hoof bandages. Should I be using a diaper to keep the site moist? Your input would be appreciated? |

Posted on Sunday, Oct 10, 2004 - 12:19 pm: Two days after being shod, a hot nail was determined as the cause of his lameness. Stall rest, bute, and the nutromizine poultice {spelling error} was ordered. The shoe was pulled Sat morning and reapplied. I have read through the other sites on lameness, bandaging, and abscess. I was wondering if I was bandaging correctly. |

Changed twice daily. If this does not keep it from abscessing I treat it as described under Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels. It is draining the abscess that is key and there is no single way to bandage a foot Jean. I find the way we describe easy and effective. DrO |

Before posting I did a web search on my problem. Some of the material listed under Equine Diseases never downloaded. In responding to your first posting I couldn't even find my discussion. When signing on to the Horseman website, I have been unable to access last week or last day posts. I obviously have a problem with my computer. As far as the hot nail, I have dressed the wound with poultice to the frog and nail holes. THe dressing held very well between poultice applications. I can see why a diaper would be effective but used what I had available. I have wondered why other members write when you do have thorough information available under care of the horse and equine diseases. The discussions never came up when I did a search. I removed the poultice smell from my hands by rinsing with vinegar and lemon juice. I spilled poultice on my jeans after the first application and revisited the feed store. Everyone who passed me asked "How is the abcess?" Thanks for your help. The horse id doing well. |
