Discussion on Noisy breathing, but not consistently

Dear DrO,
Our 26yr old 16.3h (very big) Morgan gelding Rebel occasionally makes a rough breathing noise that reminds me of what you're supposed to do breathing out in yoga class (!) -- a sort of vocalized sound.
He doesn't have any ailments, he's an easy keeper and only gets pasture and hay (no grain), teeth are great, is in regular work, the other horses have trouble keeping up with him at the gallop on the trail even though he's so much older than they are. He's getting a little sway backed, and he's a calm old fellow (a little quieter than he was 6 years ago) but he seems just fine.
He's been doing this noisy breathing thing off for at least a year. What could it be -- is this "roaring"? It happens when he's hanging out in his stall, eating hay (he has 7x24 in/out). I haven't really heard it during exercise.

No, I can't describe it any better. I thought I would try and tape it for you, but he really does it so rarely I haven't been able to catch him in the act since you replied to my post! So, it's just a curiosity, not a health issue.
btw, we've just started to train Rebel to drive, thinking that will be a good way to keep him in work and give him a new challenge as he gets older. Though he's also ridden regularly, we don't want to stress him with jumping, etc. anymore -- though he still insists on being the lead horse, and occasionally runs away with my husband at the gallop! He's enjoying the driving lessons (he always seems to enjoy learning something new, he loves the attention and the praise!) and is ground driving very well with blinkers on roads, he's learning to trust that weird sounds aren't a threat. We'll be hitching him soon. What a cool horse (he's just turning 27)!
