My 12 year old Appaloosa mare was sent back to her breeder to take a year off following a year of on/off lameness.
When we visited her early Sept 04, she looked great. My daughter rode her and said she felt sound, and was probably ready to go back into training in a couple of monthes
Then came the phone call 5 weeks later.
Our darling horse was found dead in the field. No signs of distress at all, just lying there as if she was asleep. We could not get anyone to do a field autopsy , although her breeder did manage to take blood.
All I can think is it may have been a stoke, heart attack, something cardoi-vascular.
I don't suppose we will ever know what happened, but I would appreciate any input.

I know your pain. We lost an 8 yr old Qtr horse mare who had a 2 month old filly on her the same way. Checked her on Wednesday, she was fine, followed me around for a while, and we had to leave for my sister-n-law's funeral. The next day received a call that she was found dead in the pasture with no signs of trauma. We couldn't do an autopsy either. We felt she must have had an aneurism. Will never know. Filly was raised without problems but it broke our hearts about her mother. She was a AAA mare and this was her first baby. EO

I can't offer any input except to give you my sympathies, I'm so sorry about your beloved mare.

Lynda, I echo Aileen's sympathies. It's so hard not knowing WHY . . . yet, it seems as if it was a peaceful passing . . . and you will never have to go through the heartache of deciding WHEN to make that final decision . . . one of the most difficult things for a horse owner.
Your pain and heartache are understood by so many of us HA members.

I agree, from the description an acute cardiovascular accident but anymore than that is unknown. My sincere condolences.
