Hi, I have a 7 y/o QH gelding that has suffered a locking patella twice since I've owned him, the latest being tonight. There always seems to be a snapping/jerking of his right hind leg, but twice it has totally locked, making him drag the leg until he can pop it back up and unlock it. He is about 15 hands and roughly 1000 lbs, should I try to add some weight to him, and do you think this may help? The 2 x's that this has happened were both on rainy/cold days that he wasn't turned out and stayed in his stall for more than his regular overnights. After some hand walking and a liniment rub, he was still pretty stiff, but not locked. Should I put him in the lame paddock, or turn him out in his regular large paddock until the vet comes out on Monday? It definitely gets better with exercise, and worse with confinement. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What was the time frame between the 2 episodes of locking Stephany? I think I would keep his where he can self exercise but where you can keep a close eye on him in case he locks and is unable to unlock it. Adding weight has helped some of our cases. DrO

Hi Dr. Oglesby, Thank you for such a fast response...The first time it happened was October 12th, and I remember the date because he had his shoes done on the 10th, and it happened for the first time 2 days after that. So, basically this is the second time in less than 2 months :-( He is just getting used to the farrier, so he fights him a little, especially with his back feet. Do you think that could have caused the first case, maybe an injury? This morning when I went to check on him, he was fine, and barely looked stiff, if at all. He is in the lame paddock, but he was trotting and bucking and having a good old time?? This is so confusing! Thanks again, your advice is really appreciated:-)

This should not be confusing Stephany: it is an intermittent mechanical problem and your case is pretty typical. I don't think the farrier was the cause. DrO
