Two months ago I noticed a couple of hard bumps on the flank area of my mare. She is a 3 yr. old overo paint. The trainer didn't seem concerned. When I picked her up last month, she was covered quite heavily in that area with these hard bumps. They do not oz or form scabs. There has been no hair loss. She was inside a barn with a fly control system. At first I thought maybe ant bites, but they have not gone away and now there are a couple under her belly. Any suggestions on what this could be?

Welcome Kpearson, I am afraid there are lots of causes of hard nonscabby-nonoozy bumps in horses, try this article it may help you identify what you are dealing with, Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors. DrO

Thanks, I read everything. I guess the best is to have a local vet look at them. She has not lost any hair over the bumps. She doesn't like me to touch or rub them. There was a scab that I could feel on one of them, and when I picked it off there was a white core attached to it.

If the scab was small that sounds like nodular necrobiosis it is described in the article. DrO

Thank you. What is the best method for treatment. Also, should I be concerned that I can spread this from horse to horse through brushes?
