Posted on Tuesday, Dec 7, 2004 - 7:54 am: Hi dr. O, I'm treating my 20 y/o gray pony's melanoma with 1000mg three times a day. We started in july and several tumors on his anus have shrunk.the most significant was a 1 1/2 inch sized tumor that became flat after two months. My vet wants me to treat for 6 months to a year. I had also heard of doing 3 months on and 3 months off but don't know the rational. It appears that there has been no change for the last month. Does the stomach or intestine need a break from the Cimeditine? Does it upset the natural flura of the intestine? Thanks, Kim and Foxy |

As long as there is improvement I continue using it. I usually use 30-60 day checks and a ruler for careful measurement. Then we check every 6 months and start it back if they start to enlarge. DrO |

It doesn't appear to be making any changes so i'm thinking of stopping except the opthamologist at Tufts discovered what she beleives is melanoma in his good eye. Dec 30,04 foxy had his other eye removed due to uveitis and glaucoma. We had been struggling to get his eye under control since July. So i'm nervous to stop the cimetidine for fear of loosing the other eye to melenoma. Can they grow that quickly that we would catch it in time to start the cimetidine again? If there has been no noticable change in the last few months could the med be still keeping it from growing but not shrinking? Here are some pictures of the tumors on his anus 7/04 and then 9/04. I will take some more to compare again. For some reason the upload doesn't seem to be working?? Can you tell me what should happen when i click upload? Kim |

I just pushed the button and it popped up, do you have a pop-up blocker? The tumors will usually start growing again following discontinuing but it may be quickly or they may be quiet for months. I have had good luck stopping the tumors when regrowth starts again following discontinuing use but cannot quess if you might be able to catch the eye tumor in time. DrO |

It got worse in Aug before it got better. My vet didn't think the med was helping but I'm glad I stuck it out.Kim |

I also rxed with cimetidine but found it did nothing. I then tried doing some homeopathy which seemed to slow the growths. Its worth a try if nothing else works Heidi |

Posted on Thursday, May 12, 2005 - 11:37 am: I used carcinosom and arsinica. The contact vet to call is Dr Harmon, through Harmony clinic. We changed feed diet and she gets daily flaxseed as well. The web site I believe is Harmonyclinic .comGood luck |

Posted on Friday, Aug 19, 2005 - 9:01 pm: My pony was sick in July and I stopped the cimetidine as i was feeding other meds and I was having a hard time with the schedule. I figuired it wasn't really helping at this point. Well, the bottle stated to smell so i completely discontinued it. His tumors starrted growing again! It's hard to tell if it would have happen any way as the one in his lip had gotten bigger on it's own but now the shoulder one has grown in the last two weeks.I couldn't find harmonyclinic. Dr. O have you heard of this treatment? His eye and the lip are of concern as the lip is interfering with his teeth. Would laser surgery be worth while at age 21? Would it be as hard on him as when his eye was removed? Kim |

I would get a new bottle of cimetidine and dose carefully following the high end dosages recommended in the article.DrO |

Posted on Saturday, Aug 20, 2005 - 11:11 am: Thanks Dr. O.What about laser surgery on the tumor on his lip that is interfering with chewing? The equine dentist can make him a bit more comfortable but he still catches it sometimes. There is a pocket which catches food. My concern was first putting him under for surgery and secondly, will the tissue heal comfortablly-meaning will he end up with neuroma or scarring that is painful? Kim |

Posted on Sunday, Aug 21, 2005 - 8:29 am: I think the concerns about painful neuroma or scar are not likely and I am uncertain general anesthesia is required. Very heavy sedation in a good set of stocks might be enough.DrO |
