I am the assistant to the barn owner, at the stable I board my two horses. My main responsibility is to do her job when she is out of town showing, about 80 days a year. One of the horses in our barn is currently being treated for bladder stones. He is a very sweet aged gelding. He came into our barn at the beginning of September dribbling urine. He never does 'normal' urination, just dribbling. He is being treated by a veterinarian, but has not gotten any better. (I think it is time for a second opinion, but that is not my decision to make.) Our stalls are quite large at 14x16 each opening to a 50x16 paddock. This horses' stall is completely stripped every day, since there is urine everywhere. Here is my question; When I do his stall, besides the ammonia smell, I get whiff's of yeast. Almost like a loaf of fresh baked bread has been thrown in there. I have mentioned it to the barn owner and the gelding's owner. Could a yeast infection be the problem, or aggravating it?

Hello Ramona, Yeast infections can be secondary to antibiotic use. Careful urinalysis and culture should have revealed the possibility if it was the primary problem and the way to diagnose it now. DrO
