Dr O,

My older mare had an abscess approximately 6 months ago that went unnoticed. She was a little off for a day, but then nothing.

A ridge appeared on the front of her hoof which alerted me to the fact that something had happened.

It finally grew out and now she has a defect where the abscess caused damage. It is located on her R front, outside toe, approximately 2cm x .5 cm.

My farrier said to use betadine 2x a day. I am sick about this; this is my first abscess and the fact I did nothing...

I will take a picture and post Friday. Thank you. Leilani

Leilani, from my experience with gravels that pop out the coronary band once they have grown down that far there is no need to medicate them...just when they are "fresh". Many horses pop an abscess like that and go unnoticed, my mare has one half way down her hoof and I never noticed it until the other day. Like your horse she was a tiny bit off one day and that was it.

Don't be sick about it...be happy that it caused her minimal discomfort and you didn't have to soak and rap for days
